Chapter Seventeen

It was a tossup on who to interview next. Martin Redwood, David Berks, and Wendy Gold were left. Initially Jane and Agatha drove to Martin Redwood’s home but he wasn’t there. They decided they would pay David Berks a visit. He lived down at the harbor. It would take them a good ten minutes to get there.

On the way over Jane noticed one of the roads was blocked off. They could see Max and Anthony and a number of officers on scene.

“You don’t think it’s another murder, do you?” Agatha asked.

Jane pulled up in front of the yellow tape and brought her window down. A younger officer came over. Max had spotted Jane but was talking to a pedestrian.

“What’s going on?” Jane asked.

“Sorry, miss, there has been a bit of an accident. You will have to take Bluefield Road.”

“What happened?”

The officer looked as if he was a little hesitant to answer.

“It’s okay, officer, I’ll take it from here,” Max said, coming over.

“Jane and…” he peered in. “Agatha. What are you up to?”

“Just going for an afternoon drive.”

“Really? Not by any chance doing a little investigating, are we?”

“Maybe,” Agatha piped up and Jane tapped her hand.

“So what do we have here?”

Max leaned into the car, Jane got a whiff of his cologne. It was spicy and delicious.

“Hit-and-run.”

“Are they okay?”

“Oh yeah, nothing too drastic, but they are a little shaken up.”

“Do we know them?”

“No.”

“Did they see the vehicle?”

Max shook his head. “Only briefly as it pulled away. It was a blue truck.”

“And no cameras.”

He smiled. “That’s Crystal Cove for you. No closed-circuit cameras. It’s an invasion of privacy, people say. But this is why they have them in the city. It makes life easier for us cops. Now we are left with good old detective work.”

“And you’re good at that,” Jane said, trying to compliment him despite the fact that she had solved the last case.

“The boss doesn’t think so.”

“Well, we will leave you to it.”

“Good to see you again, Agatha.”

Max touched Jane on the hand.
